Roleplay-PvP will be available when World of Warcraft: Forever launches November 4, according to Blizzard’s October 22 update. The change gives RP-focused players an open-world PvP choice from the first day rather than asking them to wait for a later rollout.
The bigger change is how everyone chooses where to play: Forever uses rulesets rather than a traditional list of individual realms. That sounds like a small interface change, but it has direct consequences for parties, guilds and players who enjoy world PvP.
Which ruleset should you choose?
| Ruleset | What it means | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Quest, explore, dungeon and opt into PvP when desired | Launch |
| PvP | Contested territories carry world-PvP risk | Launch |
| Roleplaying | A community-oriented space for characters and story | Launch |
| Roleplay-PvP | Roleplay community with contested-world PvP | November 4 launch (October 22 update) |
| Hardcore | A separate, high-stakes character experience | Planned for after launch |
The important grouping restriction
A party in one ruleset cannot group with characters in a different ruleset for dungeons or raids. Some battleground matchmaking can cross rulesets, but that doesn’t turn them into a single PvE grouping pool.
The Horde and Alliance remain separate. If your regular group is leveling together, agree on your faction and ruleset before spending hours on your characters.
PvP faction choice is unusually strict
On the PvP ruleset, Blizzard says players can only create characters for one faction within that ruleset. Once you’ve started there as Alliance, you can’t simply create a Horde alt in the same ruleset. The company also describes faction-balance controls designed to prevent populations from becoming too lopsided.
Characters can belong to both factions on Normal and Roleplaying rulesets, according to the official ruleset explanation.
What about Hardcore?
Hardcore won’t be available at launch. Blizzard says it will arrive later as a separate ecosystem with limited transfers. It’s worth delaying a Hardcore-specific character plan rather than assuming the mode will be open on November 4.
What MBGN recommends checking before launch
For a PvP-oriented group, the real question is whether you want always-relevant world danger or a normal questing world with selectable PvP. For friends who simply want to quest and clear dungeons together, sharing a ruleset matters more than picking the most populated name from an old realm list.
Blizzard has also said early name reservation begins October 27, and the October 22 announcement anticipates Roleplay-PvP participation in that process.
